A new school in Cato Manor

Sharing our coding education programme, and beating the drum that kids are creators, bright and early at assembly to a new and enthusiastic school. We will be starting in the next week with some of the 350 grade 8 learners. By grade 12 there are 95! Making a plan after the computers were stolen

Temporary quarters thanks to a local NGO while the robbery investigation continues. We had to cut the locks and scare off a mess of geckos that had taken up residence but the computers are safely secured when not in use. So great this worked out! Thandile's new Raspberry Pi hooked up to her TV in her home and ready to Scratch. We gifted her and Thandeka each an RPI for making our isiZulu Scratch video tutorial. Scratch Coding Tutorial in isiZulu - Behind the Scenes

HIV Education Through Scratch Animation

Working with learners who had been mentored by the NGO iThemba Lethu through their HIV awareness and prevention programme, we asked learners to create projects that express what they had learned and to create media that would speak to other young people. They made some terrific projects that were nuanced and addressed complex and sensitive issues such as HIV disclosure and stigma. We were very happy to receive so many astronomy-related questions from Thandile and Thandeka. It was even better when, at the Durban Astronomical Society Meeting, 90% of the questions answered by the panel of experts were their questions. We will have to arrange a visit of the Astronomical Society to the school in 2018.
